Innovative examples of Danish PSI Re-use

Winners of the Danish Government’s PSI re-use competition, “Digital Solutions based on Government Data / Government Data in Games” demonstrate the potential in re-using PSI (Public Sector Information) for both commercial and social purposes.

About the Competition

  • The Competition is one initiative by the Danish Government on opening up government data and promoting re-use. Resources on this work are available on Digitaliser.dk - online Danish creative space for everyone involved in digitising public sector information and communication between the public sector, citizens, and businesses
  • The competition was launched by the Danish Science Minister Helge Sander during October 2009. The Ministry of Science - Danish National IT and Telecom Agency facilitated the competition.
  • Winning projects were selected by an external jury of experts in Web 2.0, innovation and business development.
  • Winners are supported with awards (grants) of 100,000 Danish Kroner to further develop the ideas and make them live.
  • The Competition Winners were announced on the 4th February 2010 at the Conference Offentlige Data I Spil-konferencen (Government Data in Games Conference).

The Press Release (Danish Text online) by the Danish Minister of Science Helge Sander, comments that the creativity shown in the competition proposals points to how public sector data can be very useful to services in a myriad of genres and both companies and individuals have good ideas for PSI re-use.

House Web - energy optimization of detached houses www.husetsweb.dk (also see entry on PSI re-use Directory) - Rudi Kragh med projektet "Husets web"

The first winner was the company house Web ApS represented by director Rudi Kragh, who submitted a project idea of energy optimization. The panel of judges highlighted among other things, that there was talk about Green IT, and that the project idea was based on an economic analysis and gave the business sense.

Political Data API - access to data about politics - Michael Friis med projektet "Politisk Data Api"

The second winner was Michael Friis, who moved with an idea for a system to collect political data and helping others with access to data. The judges emphasized that the system could create more transparency and approach to factual material about the political processes and thus could strengthen democracy. Judges also noted that the project may also attract younger people who are not interested in the established political debate, but can be enticed by the opportunity to comment online.

Find the nearest toilet - where are the public toilets? Tine Müller med projektet "Find nærmeste toilet"

The last winner was Tina Muller, who had posted an idea about the display of all public toilets in a searchable map. The judges emphasized that this project was distinguished by having taken a taboo area up, which nonetheless is relevant to the principle of all people. At the same time they also stressed that this was a real fiery project.
