Polish TV weather forecasts are inaccurate and misleading!

The PRESS published an article during January 2009 titled: Skiers, sailors and lovers of mountains, who need detailed information about the weather, get them from the Internet. TV forecasts are inaccurate and misleading. The article was widely reported within the Polish media.

The article reports that part of the reason that the weather forecasts are inaccurate is due to the prices charged by the Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej, (Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW)) which impact TV broadcasters and commercial re-users of the public sector information held by the Polish national meteorological institute.

IMGW web site states that the statutory tasks as:

“The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) is a research-development unit created on the basis of the decree no. 338/72 issued by the Council of Ministers on 30 December 1972 on merging the State Hydrological and Meteorological Institute with the Institute of Water Management. IMGW operates on the basis of the act dated 25 July 1985 concerning research-development units (full text is contained in the official gazette announcing current legislation no. 44/91, para. 194 and no. 107, para. 464 with further changes). The Institute is supervised by the Minister for Environment.

Subject and scope of activity

Basic statutory tasks of the Institute include scientific and development activities as well as state services in the following domains:

  • meteorology
  • hydrology
  • oceanology
  • water management and engineering
  • water resources quality
  • wastewater management
  • sewage utilisation”

The article also makes reference to the private sector company MeteoGroup Polska.
