Norway working to develop new services using public data
Documentation on the Norwegian Workshop on innovative use of Web 2.0 technology and how to develop new services based on public data is published online.
The Norwegian name given to the Workshop was Dugnad Society 2.0, and when translated to English Dugnad meaning ‘collaborative society’.
The Workshop was hosted by the Norwegian Fornyings- og administrasjonsdepartementet (FAD) [Norwegian Ministry of Government Administration and Reform] and held the 9th December 2009 in Oslo with organisation by Origo.no on behalf of the Ministry. Registration for the Workshop closed with the maximum of 60 participants.
The online commentary published after the workshop says,
“We were completely overwhelmed by all the energy and enthusiasm during the Workshop indicating the strong interest in the themes of innovation and the potential for participation that digital tools inspire. Web 2.0 has a much potential than just the light hearted stories on Facebook. Everything suggests that Norwegian communities are willing to test new ways to collaborate with Web 2.0, internally within organisations and also externally with external users of public information. And, even with all the impressive potential of online communication and networking, it was good to meet people face to face during the Workshop and see the interest first hand and talk about how to use technology at the points where politics government, academia, business and industry intersect.”
During the meeting, the Norwegian Ministry invited suggestions for a Competition (to be held early in 2010) on innovative projects using social media and Web 2.0 tools with project grants available for the winning projects. More news about the competition is forthcoming.
Online Workshop documentation includes:
- Video (Some presentations in Norwegian and some in English)
- Twitter Listing
- Presentations
- Blog Postings and here is an excerpt (with more online), “If I take one thing home from my trip to Oslo, it's the fact that we're all seeing the same opportunities, and facing the same hurdles. Today's day-long seminar on innovation in and around government kept coming back to freeing up public data - oh, including maps. Sound familiar, anyone?”
Working Groups during the final session of the Workshop focused on discussing the following topics
- Digital democracy - tools for participation
- What needs can best solve with web 2.0 technology? About new services based on the use of public data
- What criteria should FADs competition announcement contain?
- What are the challenges and pitfalls when using social media and Web 2.0?
- Web Dugnad-how to use the commitment from the users to solve problems
