The Power of Information in an e-world

Brussels: 11 November 2008

The European Commission Directorate-General for Informatics (DIGIT) hosted a symposium titled: e-Commission 2.0. At the symposium that took place in Brussels on the 11 November 2008, Carol Tullo, the Director of Information Policy and Services at the Office of Public Sector Information outlined the UK information policy in a presentation titled: The Power of Information in an e-world.

The presentation describes how the OPSI is using the information that it has published since the year 1665 namely - The London Gazette to push the re-use of public sector information agenda forward in the UK. The presentation also states that:

“Where we provide, we deliver

  • Providing is about understanding customers and their expectations. We produce high quality online services that directly meet those needs

Where we enable, others provide

  • Communities and the market will drive innovation and we should enable that to happen.
  • The richness and variety of our information can yield an almost limitless range of services - far more than we ever can hope to provide.
  • By enabling, we are supporting innovation, controlling costs and managing our exposure to risk.”
